Project Introduction
Safehaven is planning to launch another site for 'aged-out' (over 18 yrs-old and moving out) individuals to expand service offerings to them. Safehaven looked for interactions and opportunities that could build relationships between Safehaven clients and community members at Islington Station location.
Therefore, our group designed Safehaven Garden that brings a 'reverse inclusion' between the two community groups. Reverse Inclusion is about bringing community members into Safehaven building and bring Safehaven clients out to the surrounding neighbourhood. The community garden along with compelling services and programs at Safehaven building, provides community groups opportunities to diverge and feel the sense of belonging.
About Safehaven
Safehaven is an organization that provides high quality care, family-centered and community-based residential and respite care programs for youths with wide range of complex care needs, including those living with cerebral palsy, genetic and seizure disorders, vision loss, and hearing impairment. With five locations across the GTA, it serves almost 200 families every year.

Site Research
Our journey to the given site, at 3326 Bloor St, for an observation gave us lots of information about the amenities that make up a great residential place.
We also took an inspiring tour at Safehaven, we noticed that they provide a warm, home-like and safe environment to their clients, and encourage with various activities.
After interviewing the residents of the site and the parents of Safehaven clients, we gained insights through understanding and finding opportunities to meet their needs and assets.

Insights from our interviews
We were able to interview the caregivers and parents of Safehaven clients, and different age groups of community members.
Clients at Safehaven had worries about moving out of the youth care program at the current Safehaven residence because of the difficulties of getting around with community members, lack of activities that directly affects their interaction and health. They needed a sense of belonging in the new community.
The community members needed more knowledge about people with disabilities in general. They needed an opportunities to learn to communicate with the clients and understand their lives as we all do with other friends and families.

Created two different personas that represent our interviewees from the analysis of our data.

Defines the everyday of Safehaven's clients and the community members to seek pain points and opportunities.
Designing
Brainstorming and Designing
Using brainstorming method of mind mapping, clustering method (utilizing data synthesis method), and creating a needs & assets chart, we were able to explore laterally and deeply about possible opportunities that satisfies both groups's needs and assets in enjoyable and engaging ways.
System Diagram
When our direction got more definite and detailed, we created a system diagram. System diagramming was a visual way to explain each steps of Safehaven's offering points, interactive points between the two groups of Safehaven's 18+ clients and community members. The effectiveness of interactions and the impacts on individuals were clearly communicated to our clients.
Storyboard
Storyboard was also shown to clients, and they were able to see the specific interactions and emotions in perspectives of our created personas.
